Emmett Community Garden Jobs and
Timeframes
April Till the garden and get ready
for planting. Need people to run the tillers and to
rake out the high and low spots.
April – June
Plant rows in the garden. Need
people to make furrows, plant seeds and cover over.
Then the dripline must be laid out on top of the
planted row and staked in place. Check for breaks
in dripline and mend as necessary.
April- June Once rows are planted and
they emerge from the ground we begin to weed. Need
people to run the tiller and hoe rows that are to
narrow for the tiller. Hand weed down the row
picking out weeds from good plants.
June – September Continue weeding as
time permits. Mostly by hand as the plants are too
large to get the tiller between rows.
June- October Harvest the ripe
produce. Picking is done twice per week on Tuesday
morning and then again on Saturday morning. This is
just going down each row picking the ripe vegetable
and packing them into the food bank for repackaging
or storage. We pick especially on Tuesday as the
foodbank is open that afternoon so people get fresh
produce.
September – November
Begin to take down the garden. This
is mostly pulling plants and removing them from the
garden unless they are small plants that the tiller
can chop up. We will also cover the entire garden
with compost so it can be tilled in for the winter.
As we take the rows apart we also roll up the
dripline and store it for the winter.
Hopefully by mid November we have the
garden put to bed until spring and then we do it
again.
Groups can get coached on the job and
do most of it but picking on their timeframes to
meet the groups needs. You don’t have to come every
week but it is best if we kind of have an idea of
who will be in the garden each week so special jobs
can be assigned if needed. You can work an hour or
all day. You pick the amount you want to work and
contribute.
